  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sand Fever -- Quintessential Dickens! : Dickens has 10 or 15 different stories going on at the same time and all become blended together as the book progresses This makes it a little hard to follow sometimes, but quite interesting--almost fascinating really-- and also paints a vivid picture of the times and the people. We have used it as THE BOOK for a family ZOOM book club, and this has created a lot of new Dickens fans in our family. Now, not everyone liked it. Dickens was indeed wordy--he was not paid by the word, but he was paid by the installments--and it does require an investment of time up front and faith that it will all come together as you get further into it. My advice is to make the investment! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Georgina Winslow -- Sorry, but its tedious! : I am a Brit, an avid reader and I love ‘meaty’ books and novels like many of Charles Dickens’ books. I’m also committed to them once I’ve invested a certain amount of pages and am determined to finish. However, this book beat me; I persevered for over 200 pages but was finally defeated. I found that he majored on minor characters, unimportant little events took up reams of paper. Of course at the time of writing he was writing in installments and got paid by the word so it was in his interest to make it as lengthy as possible. The other thing is that my husband and I had just watched the ‘90’s BBC version, so I knew ‘what happened’ in the end. You have to really be a plodder to get through this one! • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. Richard Harris -- The worst reading ever. : This review is for the MP3 Audio version. I had been looking forward to listening to this after enjoying the MP3 of Little Dorrit, performed superbly by Anton Lesser. Unfortunately, this disc is a disgrace. Apart from the questionable decision of not choosing an English voice to read Dickens, the performance is so lazy and wooden that it sucks all the interest out of the novel. The reader has not even bothered to learn how common London place names are pronounced ('Southwark' in the first paragraph is not 'south-wark') and has countless weird pronunciations of common English words ('ruin' is rendered throughout as 'roon'). Given that Dickens is the most dramatic of novelists, including virtual stage directions in the text ('he sneered,' 'she sobbed,' 'he roared'), there is no excuse for delivering every line using a flat monotone in which even such distinctions as male, female, educated, working class, all sound the same. This recording does Dickens an unforgivable disservice and everyone connected with its production should be ashamed. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Not From Here -- Egregiously Terrible Edition: Do Not Buy : I am still looking forward to reading "Our Mutual Friend," but this Kindle edition is not the one I will read. The word choices and sentence structure made me suspect immediately that this was not the novel as written by Dickens. When I checked against another version, my suspicions were confirmed. Example, from the end of the actual novel's first paragraph: a boat is floating "on the Thames, between Southwark bridge which is of iron, and London Bridge, which is of stone, as an autumn evening was closing in." Contrast that with the Kindle edition I purchased, in which the boat is floating "on the Thames, between Southwark bridge that is of iron, and London Bridge which is of stone, as an autumn evening became final in." "Became final in"? What does that even mean? And the odd, often incomprehensible wordings continue. Not only are they not Dickens' words; they don't even sound like the words of someone who speaks English. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dsimm77 -- Dickens doing what he does best - character development : If you love Charles Dickens, like I do, you will love this book. This story has a lot of characters, so it takes some concentration to keep 'the big picture' in mind, and this is more of a challenge in the first third of the book. But true to Dickens' form, they all play a role and it all comes together nicely in the end. To me, reading this book, as in most of his others, is a 'time warp' where I get to to feel like I am living in mid-18th century London and get to examine how much people have not changed in the last 170 years - we still have many of the same character strengths and flaws, and I find that comforting in some way - the world has been the way that it is for a very long time! • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Steve M. -- Already a difficult story to follow, and the voice talent is mono-tonal : Yikes, I get these books on MP3 to STAY AWAKE while driving on the freeway, OMG, this is a very complex story of MANY characters and situations, at one point I was taking notes of all the names, and the voice talent has a monotonal voice, he has a difficult time assigning character with his inflections for each person in the story making it even MORE difficult to follow, if that sounds intriguing then this is the MP3 story for you! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Book fiend -- Delightful Dickens : We should all read Dickens again! Yes, it is long, but that's because Dickens' stories were all published week by week in periodical magazines. The equivalent of our serials on television perhaps. But his writing is so incredibly masterly that you quickly forget about the slightly dated subject matter and find yourself immersed in his world. Once you have got going and got used to the longer sentences and the style, the story will gather you in and the characters will entertain and amuse. This is actually a very funny book - the pictures he paints of the various folk are so observant and not so far distant from people around today. Well worth the effort. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew Moffat -- Absolutely unreadable - not Dickens : I don’t know if other reviews received the same Kindle document as I did - but what I got was unreadable nonsense - it’s seems it has been computer translated from another language. I wish I could get either my time back. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 18, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from bob de herb -- wrong cover : This not a case of judging a book by it's cover but i ordered all the Charles Dickens novel in the penguin classics series with the cartoon like sketches on them, however this one turned up with a scenic view on it, which sort of ruins the set, call me old fashioned but i like to get what i ordered. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Evelyn Blackburn -- Unreadable : I don't know how this book was produced but it is unreadable. The first page has yr (not a full word) . Before the end of the first page there is the following .... stored an keen look out. He had not internet ... ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Martin Grundy -- Some eccentric stylistic mannerisms but a good read nevertheless : This is the last of Dickens' novels and contains some stylistic quirks. He talks a lot about "dust" which is presumably a metaphor for something, but he never says what. I tried to imagine what it could mean, but failed, and concluded that it represents something trivial and commonplace that you can nevertheless make a lot of money out of.
